ALTMAN-- SOPHIE B. ALTMAN (Age 95) On Saturday, May 24, 2008, SOPHIE B. ALTMAN of Washington, DC, a pioneer in radio and television, she was the founder and producer of IT'S ACADEMIC, the award-winning, television quiz show beginning it's [sic] 48th season in September, the longest running quiz show in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Beloved wife of the late Norman S. Altman and beloved mother of the late Janet Spragens. She is survived by her children, Susan Altman, Robert Altman and his wife, Lynda Carter Altman, Nancy Altman and husband, Ira C. Lupu; her grandchildren, Robin Spragens Trepanier and husband, Oscar, Lee Spragens Irwin and husband, Thomas, Jennfer Altman-Lupu, James Altman, Michael Altman-Lupu, Jessica Altman and her great-grandson, Luke Trepanier. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 29 at 10 a.m. at Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb St., NW, Washington, DC. Memorial contributions may be made to the Janet R. Spragens Federal Tax Clinic, Washington College of Law, American University, 4801 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC. Interment will be at King David Memorial Gardens, 7400 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA, immediately following the service.
